Uniforms and Vehicle Markings Guidelines for NSW Security Industry

These guidelines are issued pursuant to Section 48 (2)(e)(ii) & (iii) of the Security Industry Act 1997 in association with Clause 28 of the Security Industry Act Regulation, 1998.

The guidelines are current as of 1 January 1999 and may be further updated or changed in consultation with industry representatives in an effort to establish best practice.

The NSW Police Commissioner has released the following guidelines which apply to all security officers and security companies.

These guidelines govern the design of security uniforms, emblems and security vehicle markings.

  1. Uniforms and emblems must not resemble nor create the impression of affiliation with any Australian or New Zealand Police Service or other Government or Semi-Government body.

  2.  
  3. Designs must not include any of the following words: Police, Detective, Private Detective, Highway Patrol, New South Wales State, Enforcement.

  4. nor
     

  5. any other words purporting to infer a connection with any Government body, where a Government body is already using such words, and when coupled with an emblem which may deceive or cause others to think that the security uniform, vehicle or stationery used has an association with that Government body including Commonwealth forces: such as the Army, Navy and Air Force.
  6. Designs must not includes emblems or insignia which have (or closely resemble) a police design. This includes colour imitation or colour scheme of a police insignia.
  7. Designs must not includes emblems or insignia using a coat of arms bearing the "Kangaroo and Emu with a Laurel and Shield" nor colour imitation or colour scheme, which in any way infers a relationship to any Federal, State or Local Government or quasi-Government Department or Authority.
  8. Designs must not include rank indicators such as chevrons, stars and crowns.
  9. Indications of rank must be worded, for example: Senior Security Officer
  10. The Blue and White chequered band commonly used by Police throughout the world, should not be worn or used on any clothing, vehicle, building or advertising material.
  11. The word SECURITY should be clearly defined in Bold print above any insignia using any colour other than Yellow or Gold.
  12. If uniforms are tailored in the style of light blue shirt and dark trousers, an example of the emblem or insignia must be forwarded to the Security Industry Registry for approval.
